Home BRIAN J STRASNICK NewsBMW 550iPerformance The rest of the 550's performance resumé is similarly impressive, with superb braking distances (111 feet from 60 mph) and tremendous grip (0.89g on our skid pad) that put it in the same territory as smaller sport sedans or even sport coupes. The same could be said for its handling in general, which is in a league above the other sedans in its class. That would probably be true without the Sport package, but the package's active roll stabilization sets the bar even higher by increasing roll stiffness through corners, improving grip and control. The steering is sublime, with perfect weighting and a near-telepathic feel. This car does exactly what you tell it to do and reports back with equal aplomb. Unlike the steering racks used for the 1 Series and X5, which can be heavy at parking speeds, the 550i's steering is thankfully light. Its all-wheel-drive system constantly moves power between front and rear, distributing torque based on steering input, and yaw and lateral G sensors. What the heck does that mean? Well, the GT-R behaves like a machine with a mind of its own — but like a well-meaning Commander Data, not a crazed HAL 9000. Going around a tight corner, you can give it more throttle than you normally would and it'll take care of the rest, sending you around said corner in the fastest way possible without letting you fuss things up. It's not idiot-proof, and it can get you in trouble should you disrespect its massive power potential. However, as long as you're not a complete fool, the GT-R makes things almost so easy that it can get boring. Materials quality is mixed, however; some soft-touch materials lend an upscale feel but hard plastic trim is too frequently seen. A former leader in cabin fit and finish, Toyota has slipped the last few years, while former vendors of subpar interiors (such as Hyundai) have stepped up their efforts considerably and passed Toyota.
